About the Gauteng Attorneys' Association

The GAA is managed by an Executive consisting of a Chairperson, 2 Co-Vice Chairpersons, a Secretary and Treasurer, assisted by an Executive of 8 (eight) members whom are elected from those members eligible to be members of the Association at the AGM of the GAA, or at any other meeting of the GAA specially called for such purpose.

Wynand Pretorius

Wynand Pretorius

Wynand Pretorius is one of the founding members of Scheepers Pretorius Inc., a reputable law firm situated in Roodepoort, Randburg and Cape Town.

Wynand obtained his LLB degree from the North West University, Potchefstroom. He was admitted as an attorney of the North Gauteng High Court in 2014. He attends to general litigation which includes, however not limited to Commercial Law, Family Law, Property Law and also Criminal Law.

Throughout his career he gained valuable knowledge in all areas of the law and is able to assist with all legal needs. He further has his right of appearance in the High court.

Wynand has completed numerous courses and training provided by the Legal Education and Development (LEAD) and the Law Society of South Africa which from the outset places him ahead of his opposition.

He has served as an executive committee member of the West Rand Legal Practitioners Association (WLPA) since 2023 and assist with the Roodepoort and Randburg Magistrates Court Liaison committee. He is further responsible for the social events organised by the WLPA.  Wynand was elected to serve as an executive member of the Gauteng Attorney Association for the year 2026.

Brandon Deneys

Brandon Deneys

Brandon Deneys is an attorney committed to becoming a pioneer in the legal profession. He is driven by a dedication to delivering excellent legal services to clients from all walks of life. Through continuous engagement with colleagues and thoughtful consideration of diverse legal perspectives, Brandon strives to contribute meaningfully to the sustainable growth and development of South African law.

He obtained his LL.B in 2018, followed by a Master’s degree in Labour Law from the University of Johannesburg in 2019. Under exceptional academic guidance, he achieved a distinction for his dissertation, which examined the constitutionality of a mandatory retirement age in South Africa.

While completing his full‑time Master’s degree, Brandon commenced his articles of clerkship at Gerard Culhane Attorneys, where he developed a strong foundation in civil litigation. Seeking to broaden his expertise in employment law, he ceded his articles to Cavanagh and Richards Attorneys in 2020. There, he gained substantial practical experience preparing for CCMA arbitrations dealing with unfair dismissals, unfair labour practices, and related matters. His litigation skills were further sharpened through exposure to cases involving domestic violence and maintenance.

In 2021, Brandon founded B Deneys Attorneys, where he serves as Director. The firm focuses on civil and commercial litigation as well as employment law. Brandon also contributes to the profession through his service on the Executive Committees of both the West Rand Legal Practitioners Association and the Gauteng Attorneys Association.

Bhavna Singh

Bhavna Singh

Bhavna Singh is a Director and Partner at VZLR Inc. She holds an LLB from the University of Pretoria (2010) and an LLM in Commercial Law from the University of South Africa (2017) and has further pursued postgraduate qualifications in Basic Labour Law at the University of Cape Town and Advanced Labour Law at the University of Pretoria. Bhavna joined VZLR Inc. as a candidate attorney in 2011, was admitted as an attorney in 2013 and appointed as a director in 2018. Her practice is firmly rooted in Litigation and Administrative Law whilst specialising in Labour Law. Bhavna has served on the Executive Committee of the Pretoria Attorneys’ Association since 2017, including being actively involved on the High Court Sub-Committee and was recently appointed as the Chairperson of the Pretoria Attorneys’ Association. Bhavna is driven by a powerful commitment to transformation, meaningful change, and the advancement of women in law, and continues to use her leadership to shape a more inclusive and progressive legal landscape within the profession.

Azhar Aziz-Ismail (Co-Vice Chairperson)

Azhar is an attorney qualified to practice in South Africa & a seasoned Knowledge Manager with experience working across Africa. Serving as Knowledge Manager at Baker McKenzie, he has built a career at the intersection of law, technology & strategy, combining expertise in dispute resolution, risk management, privacy, legal technology, digital transformation & innovation. In recognition of his contributions to the legal sector and society, Azhar was named one of the Mail & Guardian’s 200 Young South Africans in 2025.

With a proven ability to adapt quickly and deliver innovative solutions, Azhar has worked across multiple jurisdictions, bridging traditional legal practice with forward-looking knowledge and technology initiatives.

Azhar is deeply embedded in the profession through leadership roles. He serves as the youngest Chairperson of the Johannesburg Attorneys’ Association (JAA), Co-Vice Chairperson of the Gauteng Attorneys Association (GAA), and a Founding Member of the South African Attorneys Federation (SAAF). He is an alumnus and faculty member of the Legal Technology & Innovation Institute (LT&I) and was instrumental in launching the inaugural LawTech Live Conference in South Africa. Additionally, Azhar holds the Certified Generative AI Expert™ credential from the Blockchain Council.

Azhar regularly delivers thought-leadership seminars on legal technology, AI, and the responsible use of AI in law across Southern Africa. Underscoring his expertise, the Law Society of South Africa tasked him in 2025 with assembling and leading its expert AI Committee. He is also an Ambassador of the South African Artificial Intelligence Association. His ability to translate complex technological developments into practical legal insights has made him a trusted voice in this rapidly evolving space.

Beyond the profession, Azhar is passionate about social impact, diversity and inclusion. Inspired by his early participation in an international humanitarian convoy, he joined Constellation 150 (C150), a youth-led non-profit in SA, as a Director in 2023. There, he focuses on strategic growth and impactful initiatives in education, community upliftment and social development.

Through these roles, Azhar has consistently demonstrated a solution-driven approach, thriving in diverse environments and using challenges as opportunities to grow. His blend of legal expertise, technological fluency, and commitment to social good positions him at the forefront of shaping how the legal profession in Africa, and globally, adapts to an era of digital transformation and innovation.

Wendel Bloem

Wendel Bloem

Wendel has the B.Proc and LLB degrees from the Rand Afrikaans University (RAU), as well as a Certificate in Sports Law from the University of Pretoria (UP). He is an admitted attorney, enrolled with the Legal Practice Council of South Africa, with Right of Appearance in the High Court of South Africa. He has extensive experience in litigation in the Magistrates and High Courts of South Africa (and Botswana), the Supreme Court of Appeal (and Electoral Court) and the Constitutional Court. Wendel is a former Vice Chairperson and Chairperson of the Johannesburg Attorneys Association, the former Co-Vice Chairperson of the Gauteng Attorney’s Association and current committee member, former BLA legal education lecturer, former Director at ProBono.Org, Director at Mkhabela Huntley Attorneys, former Head of Commercial and Contracts at Theron Inc and current School of Education committee member of LEAD (Legal Education and Development) at the Law Society of South Africa (LSSA). He is the Founding Member and current Director of Wendel Bloem Attorneys

Millie Shantall-Lurie (Treasurer)

Millie was admitted as an Attorney in 1999 and specializes in all areas of Company and Commercial Law. She was also admitted as a Notary Public in 2000. She is currently the Managing Partner of Friedland Hart Solomon & Nicolson Attorneys and Heads the Companies and Corporate Law Commercial Department of the Firm. She served as Vice-Chairperson of the Pretoria Attorneys’ Association and she is currently the Treasurer of the Pretoria Attorneys Association and has served on the Executive Committee of the Pretoria Attorneys Association since 2010. She serves as a Steering Committee Member and Treasurer on the Gauteng Attorneys’ Association and has served on the Executive Committee of the Gauteng Attorneys Association since date of inception of the Gauteng Attorneys Association on 19 July 2018. She is currently an appointed examiner for the Notarial Practice examinations on the Legal Practice Council and she also serves on the Investigating and Disciplinary Committee of the Legal Practice Council.

Yusuf Wadee (Co-Vice Chairperson)

Yusuf Wadee (Co-Vice Chairperson)

As one of the founding members of the GAA , he is at present the Vice Chairperson of the Gauteng Attorneys Association and has been admitted as a practising attorney since 2001. Yusuf has previously served as interim Chairperson of the Gauteng Attorneys Association in its formation year and thereafter served as Chairperson of the Gauteng Attorneys Association in 2025. He has been an executive member since inception and together with Millie Shantall Lurie, Chantelle Gladwin-Wood and Tiaan Joubert play an important part in mentoring the executive.

He is currently an executive member of the Johannesburg Attorneys Association and has served on this executive since 2009. At the JAA, he has held the positions of Chairperson and Vice Chairperson through the years. A passion for mentoring young practitioners has led to him conducting High Court and Magistrates Court Tours for Candidate Attorneys. Yusuf has also served on the JAA High Court Committee at the Efficiency Enhancement Committee meetings both at provincial and regional levels, the Road Accident Fund Committee, the Office committee, the Labour committee, to name a few. A few of his roles involved been called upon to address the judiciary on behalf of the profession to offer messages of support to Honourable Judges on their passing, called into meetings with the Deputy Judge President of the Johannesburg High Court, participated in the court precinct committee and  coordinated law students in a Johannesburg High Court Pilot Project to scan physical files onto a digital platform. He was selected to be part of the Pilot Project with CaseLines at its inception and during the roll out prior to the Covid pandemic. Further, he was subsequently invited to a Pilot Project to test Court Online and provided training and assistance to candidate legal practitioners and JAA members on these platforms.

Yusuf was invited to represent Law Society of South Africa and the profession in various stakeholder meetings. In addition, he assists with the social aspect for attorneys and hosted Golf Days, and the JAA’s inaugural Padel Tournament in 2025.

Together with the late Jaques Tarica and the JAA Committee, he played a role in the empowerment of the West Rand Legal Practitioners Association by securing their involvement in the profession and guiding their Chairman and executive to be co-opted to the JAA and participate in various stakeholder meetings. This association stands strong and committed to the rule of law and plays a crucial role in the Gauteng landscape.

At the Legal Activation series hosted by Innovative Entrepreneurs NPC, in collaboration with BMW Group, LSSA, SAWLA, SAHRC, and AFSA on the new era of economic transformation and SADC cooperation expanding cross-border commerce, and the role of the legal profession, an invitation was extended to him to moderate a panel.

He has attended many meetings with the LSSA RAF Committee and was solicited to coordinate the legal profession and played a significant role in chairing various organisations to present a Memorandum to the Road Accident Fund, in an endeavour to assist with its Governance.

He is an active member of the National Association of Democratic Lawyers – Johannesburg Branch and has served as Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, Secretary, Vice Secretary, with him currently heading the Development of Jurisprudence portfolio, on the executive committee. He has represented NADEL at various meetings with the Judiciary, been involved in GBV Projects, CALS, and in International Human Rights platforms. Yusuf was invited to be part of the delegation to Cuba that led an activism campaign for the successful release of the “Cuban 5” under the leadership of Attorney and stalwart, Mohomed Randera. As a member of the Constitutional law Committee, he was part of a Nadel Delegation that addressed parliament.

Yusuf was invited to assist in the establishment of Soweto Legal Fraternity in 2017 and remains a member.

In the sporting arena, he has completed his accreditation with SAFA with an introductory coaching course and other international coaching courses for soccer. He served as the Head Coach of Lenasia Wolves Football Club and was appointed as the Secretary of the Lenasia Soccer Academy. Disciplinary hearings for the Lenasia Soccer League and others were Chaired by him as he was part of its executive committee.

He is at present the appointed Secretary of Padel South Africa (trading as the South African Padel Association) and assist 360 Padel SA with Disciplinary Hearings and Appeals. He was privileged to be invited to play a role in the SA Invitational held at the DP Wanderers Stadium in 2025. Yusuf aims to continue with his efforts to provide a platform for South African padel players to play internationally and develop players in the dream of Olympics 2032.

Yusuf has at various stages throughout his legal career, assisted the legal profession to unite for the benefit of the supremacy of law and to promote and enhance access to justice.

Chantelle Gladwin-Wood (Secretary)

Chantelle Gladwin-Wood (Secretary)

Chantelle is a Partner of HBGSchindlers and the lead practitioner of the Constitutional Law, Administrative Law, PFMA and Procurement, Municipal Law department. She specialises in all areas of commercial and residential property practice and litigation, including municipal property law, public and administrative and constitutional law relating to property, community scheme matters, evictions, general property management and property-owning enterprise management, as well as property holding restructuring, insolvency and credit security.

Chantelle is a member of the Johannesburg Attorneys’ Association, the Pretoria Attorneys’ Association, Gauteng Attorneys’ Association, NADEL Johannesburg and a council member of the Gauteng Legal Practice Council. Chantelle is also an accredited Arbitrator by AFSA Pretoria.

Chantelle is a vocal advocate of pro bono work and works on many different pro bono and community upliftment matters with various organisations. She is also passionate about teaching and lecturing, and often lectures and runs training programs/sessions for legal practitioners with various different organisations. Chantelle has authored numerous academic pieces.  

Marianne Pretorius (Chairperson)

Marianne Pretorius (Chairperson)

Marianne is a senior practicing attorney with prodigious knowledge and experience. She started her legal career in 1991 as a prosecutor. After completing her articles, she began her own firm and is the founder and Sole Proprietor of a specialised boutique law firm, Marianne Pretorius Attorneys based in the West of Johannesburg.

Marianne is the Chairperson of the West Rand Legal Practitioners’ Association which serves as voice for legal practitioners in the West Rand. She also serves on the executive committee of the Gauteng Attorneys Association, is the secretary of both the Gauteng and Gauteng Local Division Efficiency Enhancement Committees and is a member of the High Court liaison committee. Marianne is part of the Master of the High Court Committee as well as the Johannesburg High Precinct committee. Marianne is the secretary of the Road Accident Fund Collaboration Committee and assists with facilitation of meetings where the state of both Johannesburg and Pretoria High Court Rolls and the capacity of the Courts is discussed at length. Marianne is responsible and takes the lead to facilitate meetings in all the Lower Courts situated within the West Rand District, and have been liaising with Randburg, Randfontein, Krugersdorp, Kagiso, and Westonaria Magistrates’ Courts to name only a few.

Marianne Pretorius Attorney was part of the Court-Online Pilot Project and is actively involved in the Pilot Project which will be launched in the Lower Courts. Marianne is part of the South African Chapter of the International Association of Women Judges (SAC-IAWJ), where she is a mentor and had the honour of addressing the mentors and mentees at the Constitutional Court of the Republic of South Africa, on ethics within the legal fraternity.  Marianne serves on the Sheriff Liaison Committee where she engages and partakes in constructive meetings with the various sheriff associations.

Marianne is a Small Claims Court Commissioner and an activist and promoter of access to justice for all those who require it. She is passionate about the law and is committed to the promotion of the legal profession. She is vehement about the training of candidate legal practitioners, professionalism, ethical conduct within the fraternity and strives to make a difference within the legal profession.

Hilde Eksteen

Hilde Eksteen

Hilde Eksteen is a practicing attorney with a strong commitment to the development and transformation of the legal profession in South Africa. She actively serves on the Law Society of South Africa (LSSA) Youth Committee and has been an active committee member of the Gauteng Attorneys Association (GAA) since 2017.

In 2024, she served as Chairperson of the Johannesburg Attorneys Association (JAA) and continues to participate actively in committee engagements, with a particular focus on youth league initiatives and the advancement of young legal practitioners. She was a committee member of the West Rand Legal Practitioners’ Association (WLPA) from 2017 to 2023 and remains an active member of the association.

She is deeply passionate about training, mentorship, and providing guidance to the youth and future lawyers of South Africa. Through her professional and committee involvement, she is committed to empowering young legal practitioners and contributing meaningfully to the growth, excellence, and integrity of the legal profession. She is driven by a genuine passion for the law and its practice and is dedicated to making a lasting impact within South Africa’s legal landscape.

Armand du Plessis

Armand du Plessis

Armand du Plessis is a Director at Wynand du Plessis & Partners Inc.

He holds a Master’s degree in Labour Law from Nelson Mandela University and has previously served as an Acting Magistrate.

Armand serves on the Executive Committee (EXCO) of the Gauteng Attorneys Association and the West Rand Legal Practitioners Association, where he contributes to the advancement of the legal profession.

His practice reflects a keen interest in and specialisation in Family Law and is he also a Conveyancer. In addition to his legal career, he is a former Mr South Africa!

Conrad Van Der Vyver

Conrad obtained his Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree at the University of Pretoria, South Africa in 2012 and was admitted as an Attorney to the High Court of South Africa in 2014. He was also admitted as a Lawyer to the Supreme Court of New South Wales, Australia in 2019. Conrad’s qualifications include: LLM (Cyberlaw) with Distinction at the University of Johannesburg (2025), Post Graduate Certificate in Medical Malpractice Litigation, Legal Education and Development (LEAD) (2015), Post Graduate Certificate in Cybercrimes and Cybersecurity, University of Cape Town (2017), International Professional Development, University of Southern Queensland (2019), Practical Legal Training (College of Law 2019), Equity Law, Property and Trust A and B, Constitutional Law and Various GDPR (EU) certification courses.

Conrad is a Director at Van Niekerk Attorneys Incorporated since 2021. Conrad was elected to serve on the Executive Committee of the Pretoria Attorneys Association in 2021 and heads the Road Accident Fund subcommittee.
